This is a picture of My Landsknecht leather jacket. the final drawing of the pattern I designed for my Landsknecht leather jacket, It shows the horse neck used on the back, and the different slashing patterns on both fronts.
This jacket got it's start when some friends of mine had to "put-down" one of thier horses. They farm with horses and live as much with nature as they can, wasting nothing. So when this horse had fallen and brok its leg in a hole dug by some praire rodent, my friends not wanting the horse to seffer killed it. Not wanting to wast it they had the horse properly prepared and eat it, tanned the hide, most of which they used to cover a big arm chair. But they couldn't think of anything to do with the neck till they thought of me, so they offered me the neck. At first I concidered making it into a single high boot with the mane on the front, but I have thick legs and it just wan't the best use of this cool thing. The shap it was cut seamed to lend itself to an asymetrical use so then I figured it would have to be some Landsknect thing. Since the mane is on the back of a horse I then figured it would look good as that back of a jacket too. Then came the problem of designing the thing.
Designing this leather jacket was to take almost three years. For a year I carried with me a pad of paper to skribble on my ideas for some kind of pattern. I'm very happy with my finnal pattern.
Then when the pattern was drawn, copeid and cut out I found some other leather I liked and cut out the peices of the jacket Once the body was asembled I wore it around as sleeveless vest to see how it fit and work out any bugs I didn't like.
The jacket as it exsists today is the second encarnation of the outer leather layer for I was not satified with the fit of the linning and velvet layers of the mark one. Almost emediatly after trying it on i didn't like the feel of the linning nor the look of the iner fabrics, so I had cut all the linning out. Also the original plan was for a zipper front and then I desided I'd rather have all the unmached bottons like it has now. Since it was designed for a zipper there wasn't enough leather were the fronts meet to do proper botton holes in the leather plus I'd cut the slashes right up to the edge, so I've used these strips of tapestry fabric down the two front edges that is on the jacket now. However before the front closers went on I had to re design the whole inside of the jacket.
I like to wear this jacket with The Big Feather Hatsome pictures of the jacket | |||||||||||||||||||||
